Bobby George is one of the most recognisable characters ever to have thrown a dart. He was involved in the match that first brought the game to the masses, the 1980 World Championship final, a 5-3 thriller won by Eric Bristow in which there was plenty of ‘needle’ between the two players. George encountered health problems that kept him away from the top echelon of darts before he enjoyed a fairytale run to the 1994 World Championship final, hitting back from 4-1 down to win 5-4 against Sweden’s Magnus Caris in the semi-finals. He was suffering from severe back pain at the time and had to wear a steel corset when he lost the final 6-0 to John Part the following evening. Subsequently, George’s World Championship appearances were most famous for his Liberace-style stage entrance, dressed in a cape and crown, carrying a candelabra and singing to ‘We Are The Champions’. He is now a respected TV pundit and presenter.
